WATER FETCHING goes the nobleA
Brahmin's wife so pure and lovelyB
He is honour'd void of blemishC
And of justice rigid sternD
Daily from the sacred riverE
Brings she back refreshments preciousF
But where is the pail and pitcherE
She of neither stands in needG
For with pure heart hands unsulliedG
She the water lifts and rolls itH
To a wondrous ball of crystalA
This she bears with gladsome bosomI
Modestly with graceful motionJ
To her husband in the houseK
-
She to day at dawn of morningL
Praying comes to Ganges' watersM
Bends her o'er the glassy surfaceF
Sudden in the waves reflectedN
Flying swiftly far above herE
From the highest heavens descendingL
She discerns the beauteous formO
Of a youth divine createdN
By the God's primeval wisdomI
In his own eternal breastP
-
When she sees him straightway feels sheB
Wondrous new confused sensationsQ
In her inmost deepest beingL
Fain she'd linger o'er the visionJ
Then repels it it returnethR
And perplex'd she bends her flood wardsS
With uncertain hands to draw itH
But alas she draws no moreT
For the water's sacred billowsU
Seem to fly to hasten from herE
She but sees the fearful chasmI
Of a whirlpool black disclosedV
-
Arms drop down and footsteps stumbleA
Can this be the pathway homewardsU
Shall she fly or shall she tarryB
Can she think when thought and counselA
When assistance all are lostW
So before her spouse appears sheB
On her looks he look is judgmentX
Proudly on the sword he seizesU
To the hill of death he drags herE
Where delinquents' blood pays forfeitH
What resistance could she offerE
What excuses could she profferE
Guilty knowing not her guiltY
-
And with bloody sword returns heB
Musing to his silent dwellingL
When his son before him standsU
Whose this blood Oh father fatherE
The delinquent woman's NeverE
For upon the sword it dries notZ
Like the blood of the delinquentX
Fresh it flows as from the woundA2
Mother mother hither hastenJ
Unjust never was my fatherE
Tell me what he now hath doneJ
Silence silence hers the blood isU
Whose my father Silence SilenceU
What oh what my mother's bloodN
What her crime What did she AnswerE
Now the sword the sword now hold IB2
Thou thy wife perchance might'st slaughterE
But my mother might'st not slayC2
Through the flames the wife is ableA
Her beloved spouse to followD2
And his dear and only motherE
Through the sword her faithful sonJ
Stay oh stay exclaim'd the fatherE
Yet 'tis time so hasten hastenJ
Join the head upon the bodyB
With the sword then touch the figureE
And alive she'll follow theeB
-
Hastening he with breathless wonderE
Sees the bodies of two womenJ
Lying crosswise and their heads tooE2
Oh what horror which to chooseU
Then his mother's head he seizesU
Does not kiss it deadly pale 'tisU
On the nearest headless bodyB
Puts it quickly and then blessesU
With the sword the pious workF2
Then the giant form uprisesU
From the dear lips of his motherE
Lips all god like changeless blissfulA
Sound these words with horror fraughtG2
Son oh son what overhast'ningF2
Yonder is thy mother's bodyB
Near it lies the impious headH2
Of the woman who hath fallenJ
Victim to the judgment swordI2
To her body I am graftedJ2
By thy hand for endless agesU
Wise in counsel wild in actionJ
I shall be amongst the godsU
E'en the heav'nly boy's own imageK2
Though in eye and brow so lovelyB
Sinking downwards to the bosomI
Mad and raging lust will stirE
-
'Twill return again for everE
Ever rising ever sinkingF2
Now obscured and now transfigur'dJ2
So great Brama hath ordain'dJ2
He 'twas sent the beauteous pinionsU
Radiant face and slender membersU
Of the only God begottenL2
That I might be proved and temptedJ2
For from high descends temptationJ
When the gods ordain it soU
And so I the Brahmin womanJ
With my head in Heaven recliningF2
Must experience as a PariahM2
The debasing power of earthR
-
Son I send thee to thy fatherE
Comfort him Let no sad penanceU
Weak delay or thought of meritJ2
Hold thee in the desert fastJ2
Wander on through ev'ry nationJ
Roam abroad throughout all agesU
And proclaim to e'en the meanestJ2
That great Brama hears his cryB2
-
None is in his eyes the meanestJ2
He whose limbs are lame and palsiedJ2
He whose soul is wildly rivenJ
Worn with sorrow hopeless helplessU
Be he Brahmin be he PariahM2
If tow'rd heaven he turns his gazeU
Will perceive will learn to know itJ2
Thousand eyes are glowing yonderE
Thousand ears are calmly list'ningF2
From which nought below is hidJ2
-
If I to his throne soar upwardJ2
If he sees my fearful figureE
By his might transform'd to horrorE
He for ever will lament itJ2
May it to your good be foundJ2
And I now will kindly warn himN2
And I now will madly tell himN2
Whatsoe'er my mind conceivethR
What within my bosom heavethR
But my thoughts my inmost feelingsU
Those a secret shall remainO2
