A
-
A husband's death brings always sighsB
The widow sobs sheds tears then driesB
Of Time the sadness borrows wingsC
And Time returning pleasure bringsC
Between the widow of a yearD
And of a day the differenceE
Is so immenseF
That very few who see herG
Would think the laughing dameH
And weeping one the sameH
The one puts on repulsive actionI
The other shows a strong attractionI
The one gives up to sighs or true or falseJ
The same sad note is heard whoever callsK
Her grief is inconsolableL
They say Not so our fableL
Or rather not so says the truthM
-
To other worlds a husband wentN
And left his wife in prime of youthM
Above his dying couch she bentN
And cried 'My love O wait for meO
My soul would gladly go with thee '-
But yet it did not goP
The fair one's sire a prudent manQ
Check'd not the current of her woeP
At last he kindly thus beganQ
'My child your grief should have its boundR
What boots it him beneath the groundR
That you should drown your charmsS
Live for the living not the deadT
I don't propose that you be ledT
At once to Hymen's armsS
But give me leave in proper timeU
To rearrange the broken chimeU
With one who is as good at leastV
In all respects as the deceased '-
'Alas ' she sigh'd 'the cloister vowsW
Befit me better than a spouse '-
The father left the matter thereX
About one month thus mourn'd the fairX
Another month her weeds arrangedY
Each day some robe or lace she changedY
Till mourning dresses served to graceZ
And took of ornament the placeZ
The frolic band of lovesA2
Came flocking back like dovesA2
Jokes laughter and the danceB2
The native growth of FranceB2
Had finally their turnC2
And thus by night and mornD2
She plunged to tell the truthM
Deep in the fount of youthM
Her sire no longer fear'dE2
The dead so much endear'dF2
But as he never spokeG2
Herself the silence brokeG2
'Where is that youthful spouse ' said sheO
'Whom sir you lately promised me '-
