The Dog Whose Ears Were Cropped Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBACDDEFEGHHIIE AAEJJEKKLL

'What have I done I'd like to knowA
To make my master maim me soA
A pretty figure I shall cutB
From other dogs I'll keep in kennel shutB
Ye kings of beasts or rather tyrants hoA
Would any beast have served you so 'C
Thus Growler cried a mastiff youngD
The man whom pity never stungD
Went on to prune him of his earsE
Though Growler whined about his lossesF
He found before the lapse of yearsE
Himself a gainer by the processG
For being by his nature proneH
To fight his brethren for a boneH
He'd oft come back from sad reverseI
With those appendages the worseI
All snarling dogs have ragged earsE
-
The less of hold for teeth of foeA
The better will the battle goA
When in a certain place one fearsE
The chance of being hurt or beatJ
He fortifies it from defeatJ
Besides the shortness of his earsE
See Growler arm'd against his likesK
With gorget full of ugly spikesK
A wolf would find it quite a puzzleL
To get a hold about his muzzleL
