The Cunning Fox Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEEFGHIIJJKKLLLL MMNN OPQQRS TT

A fox once practised 'tis believedA
A stratagem right well conceivedA
The wretch when in the utmost straitB
By dogs of nose so delicateC
Approach'd a gallows whereD
A lesson to like passengersE
Or clothed in feathers or in fursE
Some badgers owls and foxes pendent wereF
Their comrade in his pressing needG
Arranged himself among the deadH
I seem to see old HannibalI
Outwit some Roman generalI
And sit securely in his tentJ
The legions on some other scentJ
But certain dogs kept backK
To tell the errors of the packK
Arriving where the traitor hungL
A fault in fullest chorus sungL
Though by their bark the welkin rungL
Their master made them hold the tongueL
Suspecting not a trick so oddM
Said he The rogue's beneath the sodM
My dogs that never saw such jokesN
Won't bark beyond these honest folksN
-
The rogue would try the trick againO
He did so to his cost and painP
Again with dogs the welkin ringsQ
Again our fox from gallows swingsQ
But though he hangs with greater faithR
This time he does it to his deathS
-
So uniformly is it trueT
A stratagem is best when newT
