Palimpsest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABC ADA ADC ADA ADC ABAC

The walk that led out through the apple treesA
the narrow crumbling path of brick embossedB
among the clumps of grass the scattered leavesC
-
has vanished now Each spring the peoniesA
come back to drape their heavy bolls acrossD
the walk that led out through the apple treesA
-
as if to show the way until the breezeA
dismantles them and petals drift and tossD
among the clumps of grass The scattered leavesC
-
half fill a plaited basket left to freezeA
and thaw and gradually darken into mossD
The walk that led out through the apple treesA
-
has disappeared unless down on your kneesA
searching beneath the vines that twist and crossD
among the clumps of grass the scattered leavesC
-
you scrape and find simplest of mysteriesA
forgotten all this time but not quite lostB
the walk that led out through the apple treesA
among the clumps of grass the scattered leavesC
