First Snow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGH IJKL MNEO PQBE RSTU VWXY NZLLTo clear the walk before the children start | A |
for school you rise and dress and take the broom | B |
beside the door and go out into darkness | C |
where the snow you sweep from side to side | D |
- | |
is followed by the snow that falls behind | E |
your progress down the squares A dream returns | F |
you half remember having when you woke | G |
and when you pause to look back toward the porch | H |
- | |
it seems you've been nowhere the walk you swept | I |
is whiteness now and as before To take | J |
a step from where you stand would be to risk | K |
acknowledging you've come this far by losing | L |
- | |
track of things Then someone flicks the porch light | M |
off and on to say you're needed there | N |
You go leaving a line of prints behind | E |
and even these are filled by daylight when | O |
- | |
the kids have vanished down the walk to catch | P |
the bus and everything is bright and still | Q |
So for a second time you take the broom | B |
and go to sweep the snow away And find | E |
- | |
as though recalling now the other half | R |
of what you dreamed the pattern of your steps | S |
impressed upon the walk and turned to ice | T |
the children's too going the other way | U |
- | |
revealed beneath the snow that flies before | V |
your broom until you reach the end and stop | W |
to see the footprints clear this time The dream | X |
comes back entire a line of stones across | Y |
- | |
a stream in summer when you know not where | N |
to step and yet in choosing merge with what | Z |
is swirling all around you And still searching | L |
waken to silence and a first snow falling | L |
