First Snow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGH IJKL MNEO PQBE RSTU VWXY NZLL

To clear the walk before the children startA
for school you rise and dress and take the broomB
beside the door and go out into darknessC
where the snow you sweep from side to sideD
-
is followed by the snow that falls behindE
your progress down the squares A dream returnsF
you half remember having when you wokeG
and when you pause to look back toward the porchH
-
it seems you've been nowhere the walk you sweptI
is whiteness now and as before To takeJ
a step from where you stand would be to riskK
acknowledging you've come this far by losingL
-
track of things Then someone flicks the porch lightM
off and on to say you're needed thereN
You go leaving a line of prints behindE
and even these are filled by daylight whenO
-
the kids have vanished down the walk to catchP
the bus and everything is bright and stillQ
So for a second time you take the broomB
and go to sweep the snow away And findE
-
as though recalling now the other halfR
of what you dreamed the pattern of your stepsS
impressed upon the walk and turned to iceT
the children's too going the other wayU
-
revealed beneath the snow that flies beforeV
your broom until you reach the end and stopW
to see the footprints clear this time The dreamX
comes back entire a line of stones acrossY
-
a stream in summer when you know not whereN
to step and yet in choosing merge with whatZ
is swirling all around you And still searchingL
waken to silence and a first snow fallingL
