| for school you rise and dress and take the broom | B |
| beside the door and go out into darkness | C |
| where the snow you sweep from side to side | D |

| is followed by the snow that falls behind | E |
| your progress down the squares A dream returns | F |
| you half remember having when you woke | G |
| and when you pause to look back toward the porch | H |

| it seems you've been nowhere the walk you swept | I |
| is whiteness now and as before To take | J |
| a step from where you stand would be to risk | K |
| acknowledging you've come this far by losing | L |

| track of things Then someone flicks the porch light | M |
| off and on to say you're needed there | N |
| You go leaving a line of prints behind | E |
| and even these are filled by daylight when | O |

| the kids have vanished down the walk to catch | P |
| the bus and everything is bright and still | Q |
| So for a second time you take the broom | B |
| and go to sweep the snow away And find | E |

| as though recalling now the other half | R |
| of what you dreamed the pattern of your steps | S |
| impressed upon the walk and turned to ice | T |
| the children's too going the other way | U |

| revealed beneath the snow that flies before | V |
| your broom until you reach the end and stop | W |
| to see the footprints clear this time The dream | X |
| comes back entire a line of stones across | Y |

| a stream in summer when you know not where | N |
| to step and yet in choosing merge with what | Z |
| is swirling all around you And still searching | L |
| waken to silence and a first snow falling | L |
