The Lover's Fate Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHGI JKJK LMLM HJIJ

Hard is the fate of him who lovesA
Yet dares not tell his trembling painB
But to the sympathetic grovesC
But to the lonely listening plainB
-
Oh when she blesses next your shadeD
Oh when her footsteps next are seenE
In flowery tracts along the meadF
In fresher mazes o'er the greenE
-
Ye gentle spirits of the valeG
To whom the tears of love are dearH
From dying lilies waft a galeG
And sigh my sorrows in her earI
-
Oh tell her what she cannot blameJ
Though fear my tongue must ever bindK
Oh tell her that my virtuous flameJ
Is as her spotless soul refinedK
-
Not her own guardian angel eyesL
With chaster tenderness his careM
Not purer her own wishes riseL
Not holier her own sighs in prayerM
-
But if at first her virgin fearH
Should start at love's suspected nameJ
With that of friendship soothe her earI
True love and friendship are the sameJ
