James Thomson Poems

  • The Seasons: Summer
    From brightening fields of ether fair-disclos'd,
    Child of the sun, refulgent Summer comes,
    In pride of youth, and felt through nature's depth:
    He comes, attended by the sultry Hours ...
  • Rule, Britannia!
    When Britain first, at Heaven's command,
    Arose from out the azure main,
    This was the charter of the land,
    And guardian angels sung this strain ...
  • The Lord Of The Castle Of Indolence

    NOR did we lack our own right royal king,
    The glory of our peaceful realm and race. ...
  • The Doom Of A City
    FROM out the house I crept,
    The house which long had caged my homeless life:
    The mighty City in vast silence slept, ...
  • On à?olus's Harp
    Ethereal race, inhabitants of air,
    Who hymn your god amid the secret grove;

Thomas Moore Poem
Lay His Sword By His Side
 by Thomas Moore

Lay his sword by his side -- it hath served him too well
Not to rest near his pillow below;
To the last moment true, from his hand ere it fell,
Its point was still turn'd to a flying foe.
Fellow-labourers in life, let them slumber in death,
Side by side, as becomes the reposing brave --
That sword which he loved still unbroke in its sheath,
And himself unsubdued in his grave.
