Crown'd with the sickle and the wheaten sheafA
While Autumn nodding o'er the yellow plainB
Comes jovial on the Doric reed once moreC
Well pleased I tune Whate'er the wintry frostD
Nitrous prepared the various blossom'd SpringE
Put in white promise forth and Summer sunsF
Concocted strong rush boundless now to viewG
Full perfect all and swell my glorious themeH
Onslow the Muse ambitious of thy nameI
To grace inspire and dignify her songJ
Would from the public voice thy gentle earK
A while engage Thy noble cares she knowsL
The patriot virtues that distend thy thoughtM
Spread on thy front and in thy bosom glowN
While listening senates hang upon thy tongueO
Devolving through the maze of eloquenceP
A roll of periods sweeter than her songJ
But she too pants for public virtue sheQ
Though weak of power yet strong in ardent willR
Whene'er her country rushes on her heartS
Assumes a bolder note and fondly triesT
To mix the patriot's with the poet's flameI
When the bright Virgin gives the beauteous daysU
And Libra weighs in equal scales the yearV
From Heaven's high cope the fierce effulgence shookW
Of parting Summer a serener blueG
With golden light enliven'd wide investsX
The happy world Attemper'd suns ariseT
Sweet beam'd and shedding oft through lucid cloudsY
A pleasing calm while broad and brown belowN
Extensive harvests hang the heavy headZ
Rich silent deep they stand for not a galeA2
Rolls its light billows o'er the bending plainB
A calm of plenty till the ruffled airB2
Falls from its poise and gives the breeze to blowN
Rent is the fleecy mantle of the skyC2
The clouds fly different and the sudden sunD2
By fits effulgent gilds the illumined fieldE2
And black by fits the shadows sweep alongJ
A gaily chequer'd heart expanding viewG
Far as the circling eye can shoot aroundF2
Unbounded tossing in a flood of cornG2
These are thy blessings Industry rough powerH2
Whom labour still attends and sweat and painB
Yet the kind source of every gentle artS
And all the soft civility of lifeI2
Raiser of human kind by Nature castJ2
Naked and helpless out amid the woodsK2
And wilds to rude inclement elementsL2
With various seeds of art deep in the mindM2
Implanted and profusely pour'd aroundF2
Materials infinite but idle allN2
Still unexerted in the unconscious breastO2
Slept the lethargic powers Corruption stillR
Voracious swallow'd what the liberal handP2
Of bounty scatter'd o'er the savage yearV
And still the sad barbarian roving mix'dQ2
With beasts of prey or for his acorn mealR2
Fought the fierce tusky boar a shivering wretchQ
Aghast and comfortless when the bleak northS2
With Winter charged let the mix'd tempest flyC2
Hail rain and snow and bitter breathing frostD
Then to the shelter of the hut he fledZ
And the wild season sordid pined awayT2
For home he had not home is the resortU2
Of love of joy of peace and plenty whereB2
Supporting and supported polish'd friendsV2
And dear relations mingle into blissW2
But this the rugged savage never feltX2
E'en desolate in crowds and thus his daysU
Roll'd heavy dark and unenjoy'd alongJ
A waste of time till Industry approach'dY2
And roused him from his miserable slothZ2
His faculties unfolded pointed outA3
Where lavish Nature the directing handP2
Of art demanded show'd him how to raiseU
His feeble force by the mechanic powersB3
To dig the mineral from the vaulted earthC3
On what to turn the piercing rage of fireH2
On what the torrent and the gather'd blastJ2
Gave the tall ancient forest to his axeD3
Taught him to chip the wood and hew the stoneE3
Till by degrees the finish'd fabric roseL
Tore from his limbs the blood polluted furH2
And wrapt them in the woolly vestment warmF3
Or bright in glossy silk and flowing lawnG3
With wholesome viands fill'd his table pour'dH3
The generous glass around inspired to wakeI3
The life refining soul of decent witJ3
Nor stopp'd at barren bare necessityQ
But still advancing bolder led him onK3
To pomp to pleasure elegance and graceL3
And breathing high ambition through his soulM3
Set science wisdom glory in his viewG
And bade him be the Lord of all belowN
Then gathering men their natural powers combinedM2
And form'd a Public to the general goodN3
Submitting aiming and conducting allN2
For this the Patriot Council met the fullO3
The free and fairly represented WholeM3
For this they plann'd the holy guardian lawsP3
Distinguish'd orders animated artsQ3
And with joint force Oppression chaining setR3
Imperial Justice at the helm yet stillR
To them accountable nor slavish dream'dS3
That toiling millions must resign their wealR
And all the honey of their search to suchQ
As for themselves alone themselves have raisedT3
Hence every form of cultivated lifeI2
In order set protected and inspiredU3
Into perfection wrought Uniting allR
Society grew numerous high politeV3
And happy Nurse of art the city rear'dW3
In beauteous pride her tower encircled headZ
And stretching street on street by thousands drewG
From twining woody haunts or the tough yewG
To bows strong straining her aspiring sonsF
Then Commerce brought into the public walkX3
The busy merchant the big warehouse builtY3
Raised the strong crane choked up the loaded streetZ3
With foreign plenty and thy stream O ThamesA4
Large gentle deep majestic king of floodsB4
Chose for his grand resort On either handP2
Like a long wintry forest groves of mastsC4
Shot up their spires the bellying sheet betweenD4
Possess'd the breezy void the sooty hulkE4
Steer'd sluggish on the splendid barge alongJ
Row'd regular to harmony aroundF2
The boat light skimming stretch'd its oary wingsF4
While deep the various voice of fervent toilR
From bank to bank increased whence ribb'd with oakG4
To bear the British thunder black and boldH4
The roaring vessel rush'd into the mainB
Then too the pillar'd dome magnific heavedI4
Its ample roof and Luxury withinJ4
Pour'd out her glittering stores the canvass smoothK4
With glowing life protuberant to the viewG
Embodied rose the statue seem'd to breatheL4
And soften into flesh beneath the touchQ
Of forming art imagination flush'dM4
All is the gift of Industry whate'erH2
Exalts embellishes and renders lifeI2
Delightful Pensive Winter cheer'd by himN4
Sits at the social fire and happy hearsO4
The excluded tempest idly rave alongJ
His harden'd fingers deck the gaudy SpringE
Without him Summer were an arid wasteP4
Nor to the Autumnal months could thus transmitJ3
Those full mature immeasurable storesQ4
That waving round recall my wandering songJ
Soon as the morning trembles o'er the skyC2
And unperceived unfolds the spreading dayT2
Before the ripen'd field the reapers standP2
In fair array each by the lass he lovesR4
To bear the rougher part and mitigateS4
By nameless gentle offices her toilR
At once they stoop and swell the lusty sheavesT4
While through their cheerful band the rural talkX3
The rural scandal and the rural jestO2
Fly harmless to deceive the tedious timeU4
And steal unfelt the sultry hours awayT2
Behind the master walks builds up the shocksV4
And conscious glancing oft on every sideW4
His sated eye feels his heart heave with joyX4
The gleaners spread around and here and thereB2
Spike after spike their scanty harvest pickY4
Be not too narrow husbandmen but flingE
From the full sheaf with charitable stealthZ4
The liberal handful Think oh grateful think
How good the God of Harvest is to youG
Who pours abundance o'er your flowing fields
While these unhappy partners of your kindM2
Wide hover round you like the fowls of heavenD2
And ask their humble dole The various turns
Of fortune ponder that your sons may want
What now with hard reluctance faint ye give
The lovely young Lavinia
