Prologue To Mallet's Mustapha Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGEEAAHH IICCJJKKLL

Since Athens first began to draw mankindA
To picture life and show the impassion'd mindA
The truly wise have ever deem'd the stageB
The moral school of each enlighten'd ageB
There in full pomp the tragic Muse appearsC
Queen of soft sorrows and of useful fearsC
Faint is the lesson reason's rules impartD
She pours it strong and instant through the heartD
If virtue is her theme we sudden glowE
With generous flame and what we feel we growE
If vice she paints indignant passions riseF
The villain sees himself with loathing eyesF
His soul starts conscious at another's groanG
And the pale tyrant trembles on his throneG
To night our meaning scene attempts to showE
What fell events from dark suspicion flowE
Chief when it taints a lawless monarch's mindA
To the false herd of flattering slaves confinedA
The soul sinks gradual to so dire a stateH
E'en excellence but serves to feed its hateH
To hate remorseless cruelty succeedsI
And every worth and every virtue bleedsI
Behold our author at your bar appearsC
His modest hopes depress'd by conscious fearsC
Faults he has many but to balance thoseJ
His verse with heart felt love of virtue glowsJ
All slighter errors let indulgence spareK
And be his equal trial full and fairK
For this best British privilege we callL
Then as he merits let him stand or fallL
