Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST UDVWXNow by the cool declining year condescend | A |
Descend the copious exhalations check'd | B |
As up the middle sky unseen they stole | C |
And roll the doubling fogs around the hill | D |
No more the mountain horrid vast sublime | E |
Who pours a sweep of rivers from his sides | F |
And high between contending kingdoms rears | G |
The rocky long division fills the view | H |
With great variety but in a night | I |
Of gath'ring vapour from the baffled sense | J |
Sinks dark and dreary thence expanding far | K |
The huge dusk gradual swallows up the plain | L |
Vanish the woods the dim seen river seems | M |
Sullen and slow to roll the misty wave | N |
Ev'n in the height of noon oppress'd the sun | O |
Sheds weak and blunt his wide refracted ray | P |
Whence glaring oft with many a broaden'd orb | Q |
He frights the nations Indistinct on earth | R |
Seen through the turbid air beyond the life | S |
Objects appear and wilder'd o'er the waste | T |
The shepherd stalks gigantic till at last | U |
Wreath'd dun around in deeper circles still | D |
Successive closing sits the gen'ral fog | V |
Unbounded o'er the world and mingling thick | W |
A formless gray confusion covers all | X |
