IN the early morning shineA
Of a certain day divineA
I beheld a Maiden standB
With a pitcher in her handB
Whence she poured into a cupC
Until it was half filled upC
Nectar that was golden lightD
In the cup of crystal brightD
-
And the first who took the cupC
With pure water filled it upC
As he drank then it was moreE
Ruddy golden than beforeE
And he leapt and danced and sangF
As to Bacchic cymbals clangF
-
But the next who took the cupC
With the red wine filled it upC
What he drank then was in hueG
Of a heavy sombre blueG
First he reeled and then he creptH
Then lay faint but never sleptH
-
And the next who took the cupC
With the white milk filled it upC
What he drank at first seemed bloodI
Then turned thick and brown as mudI
And he moved away as slowJ
As a weary ox may goJ
-
But the next who took the cupC
With sweet honey filled it upC
Nathless that which he did drinkK
Was thin fluid black as inkK
As he went he stumbled soonL
And lay still in deathlike swoonL
-
She the while without a wordM
Unto all the cup preferredM
Blandly smiled and sweetly laughedN
As each mingled his own draughtN
-
And the next who took the cupC
To the sunshine held it upC
Gave it back and did not tasteO
It was empty when replacedO
First he bowed a reverent bowP
Then he kissed her on the browP
-
But the next who took the cupC
Without mixture drank it upC
When she took it back from himQ
It was full unto the brimQ
He with a right bold embraceR
Kissed her sweet lips face to faceR
-
Then she sang with blithest cheerS
Who has thirst come here come hereT
Nectar that is golden lightD
In the cup of crystal brightD
Nectar that is sunny fireU
Warm as warmest heart s desireU
Pitcher never lacketh moreE
Arm is never tired to pourE
Honey water milk or wineA
Mingle with the draught divineA
Drink it pure or drink it notV
Each is free to choose his lotV
Am I old or am I coldW
Only two have kissed me boldW
-
She was young and fair and gayX
As that young and glorious dayX
