Epilogue To Agamemnon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHIJJDD KKLL

Our bard to modern epilogue a foeA
Thinks such mean mirth but deadens generous woeA
Dispels in idle air the moral sighB
And wipes the tender tear from Pity's eyeB
No more with social warmth the bosom burnsC
But all the unfeeling selfish man returnsC
Thus he began And you approved the strainD
Till the next couplet sunk to light and vainD
You check'd him there To you to reason justE
He owns he triumph'd in your kind disgustE
Charm'd by your frown by your displeasure gracedF
He hails the rising virtue of your tasteF
Wide will its influence spread as soon as knownG
Truth to be loved needs only to be shownG
Confirm it once the fashion to be goodH
Since fashion leads the fool and awes the rudeI
No petulance shall wound the public earJ
No hand applaud what honour shuns to hearJ
No painful blush the modest cheek shall stainD
The worthy breast shall heave with no disdainD
Chastised to decency the British stageK
Shall oft invite the fair invite the sageK
Both shall attend well pleased well pleased departL
Or if they doom the verse absolve the heartL
