Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGGHIJCKLMNMILM OOGLLPQOGROSTOGLLGOO UAs thus the patient dam assiduous sits | A |
Not to be tempted from her tender task | B |
Or by sharp hunger or by smooth delight | C |
Tho' the whole loosen'd spring around her blows | D |
Her sympathising partner takes his stand | E |
High on th' opponent bank and ceaseless sings | F |
The tedious time away or else supplies | G |
Her place a moment while she sudden flits | G |
To pick the scanty meal Th' appointed time | H |
With pious toil fulfill'd the callow young | I |
Warm'd and expanded into perfect life | J |
Their brittle bondage break and come to light | C |
A helpless family demanding food | K |
With constant clamour O what passions then | L |
What melting sentiments of kindly care | M |
On the new parents seize Away they fly | N |
Affectionate and undesiring bear | M |
The more delicious morsel to their young | I |
Which equally distributed again | L |
The search begins Even so a gentle pair | M |
By fortune sunk but form'd of gen'rous mould | O |
And charm'd with cares beyond the vulgar breat | O |
In some lone cot amid the distant woods | G |
Sustain'd alone by providential Heav'n | L |
Oft as they weeping eye their infant train | L |
Check their own appetites and give them all | P |
Nor toil alone they scorn exalting love | Q |
By the great Father of the spring inspired | O |
Gives instant courage to the fearful race | G |
And to the simple art With stealthy wing | R |
Should some rude foot their woody haunts molest | O |
Amid a neighbouring bush they silent drop | S |
And whirring thence as if alarmed deceive | T |
The unfeeling shool boy Hence around the head | O |
Of wandering swain the white winged plover wheels | G |
Her sounding flight and then directly on | L |
In long excursion skims the level lawn | L |
To tempt him from her nest The wild duck hence | G |
O'er the rough moss and o'er the trackless waste | O |
The heath hen flutters pious fraud to lead | O |
The hot pursuing spaniel far astray | U |
