Now Chatto you're a dreary placeA
Pale sorrow broods on ilka faceA
Therburn has run his raceA
And now and now ah me alasB
The carl lies deadC
-
Having his paternoster saidC
He took a dram and went to bedC
He fell asleep and death was gladD
That he had catched himE
For Therburn was e'en ill bestedF
That none did watch himE
-
For had the carl but been awareG
That meagre death who none does spareG
T'attempt sic things should ever dareG
As stop his pipeH
He might have come to flee or scareG
The greedy gripeH
-
How he'd had but a gill or twaeI
Death would nae got the victory saeB
Nor put poor Therburn o'er the braeJ
Into the graveK
-
-
-
The fumbling fellow some folks sayJ
Should be jobbed on baith night and dayJ
She had without'en better playJ
Remained stillL
Barren for ever and for ayeM
Do what he willL
-
Therefore they say he got some helpN
In getting of the little whelpN
But passing that it makes me yelpN
But what remeadJ
Death lent him sic a cursed skelpN
That now he's deadJ
-
Therburn for evermore farewellO
And be thy grave both dry and deepN
And rest thy carcase soft and wellO
Free fromP
no nightJ
DisturbQ
