An Elegy On Parting Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEEFFGHIIJJKKLMNN OOPPQQRSTTIt was a sad ay 'twas a sad farewell | A |
I still afresh the pangs of parting feel | B |
Against my breast my heart impatient beat | C |
And in deep sighs bemoan'd its cruel fate | D |
Thus with the object of my love to part | E |
My life my joy 'twould rend a rocky heart | E |
Where'er I turn myself where'er I go | F |
I meet the image of my lovely foe | F |
With witching charms the phantom still appears | G |
And with her wanton smiles insults my tears | H |
Still haunts the places where we used to walk | I |
And where with raptures oft I heard her talk | I |
Those scenes I now with deepest sorrow view | J |
And sighing bid to all delight adieu | J |
While I my head upon this turf recline | K |
Officious sun in vain on me you shine | K |
In vain unto the smiling fields I hie | L |
In vain the flowery meads salute my eye | M |
In vain the cheerful birds and shepherds sing | N |
And with their carols make the valleys ring | N |
Yea all the pleasure that the country yield | O |
Can't me from sorrow for her absence shield | O |
With divine pleasure books which one inspire | P |
Yea books themselves I do not now admire | P |
But hark methinks some pitying power I hear | Q |
This welcome message whisper in my ear | Q |
Forget thy groundless griefs dejected swain | R |
You and the nymph you love shall meet again | S |
No more your muse shall sing such mournful lays | T |
But bounteous heaven and your kind mistress praise | T |
