Death The Leveller Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDD EFEFAAGG HIHIJKLL

The glories of our blood and stateA
Are shadows not substantial thingsB
There is no armour against FateA
Death lays his icy hand on kingsB
Sceptre and CrownC
Must tumble downC
And in the dust be equal madeD
With the poor crook egrave d scythe and spadeD
-
Some men with swords may reap the fieldE
And plant fresh laurels where they killF
But their strong nerves at last must yieldE
They tame but one another stillF
Early or lateA
They stoop to fateA
And must give up their murmuring breathG
When they pale captives creep to deathG
-
The garlands wither on your browH
Then boast no more your mighty deedsI
Upon Death's purple altar nowH
See where the victor victim bleedsI
Your heads must comeJ
To the cold tombK
Only the actions of the justL
Smell sweet and blossom in their dustL
