We will now sing in thoughtful strainA
Of wars in Queen Victoria's reignA
The Russian bear did ages lurkB
All ready for to spring on TurkB
For Russian statesmen did divineC
That they should conquer ConstantineD
But like a greyhound after hareE
The Lion did drive back the BearE
And made it feel the British ruleF
At gates of strong SebastopolF
Then insolent was PersiaG
Till Lion had to dictate lawF
And while engaged in scenes like theseH
He was attacked by the ChineseH
And for this outrage all so wantonI
He then resolved to seize on CantonI
But soon there came a dismal cryJ
Of slaughter'd Britons from DelhiK
The Bengal Tiger sick with goreL
Did tremble at the Lion's roarL
But Britain got a serious shockM
By losing of brave HavelockM
But Campbell 'mid a numerous foeN
Full quick these armed hosts did o'erthrowL
In Abyssinian dungeons vileF
Lay captives of Great Britain's isleF
But soon the tyrant TheodoreL
Lay sadly weltering in his goreL
The savage tribes of AshanteeO
From British troops did quickly fleeK
In Afghan and Zulu warsP
Many did find their deadly scarsQ
In the land of the PharaohsR
The Christians suffered cruel woesR
Till in Alexandria BayS
The British iron clads did displayS
The mighty power they did wieldO
While their steel sides from harm did shieldO
And British army on the landO
Marched bravely o'er the burning sandO
And Arabi found 'twas useless laborL
His strong trench of Tel el KebirL
Egyptians did not wish to feelF
In their breasts cold British steelF
Their great power was soon laid lowN
And Wolseley entered Grand CairoN
Egyptians now no more revileF
The Christians on the banks of NileF
We have sung three heroes' namesT
Havelock from the land of ThamesU
And Campbell from the banks of ClydeO
And Wolseley from Liffy's sideO
When rose thistle shamrock uniteO
They do prove victors in the fightO
Now Britain once more does commandO
Respect alike on sea and landO
But now may wars forever ceaseV
And mankind ever live in peaceV
