For splitting rails and making fence | B |

He thought it was a thing of beauty | D |
Yet in its day it did its duty | D |

And though the old snake fence must fall | E |
'Twas easy made axe wedge and maul | E |
Were all the tools the pioneer | A |
Required the old rail fence to rear | A |

And the old pioneer could boast | F |
Of fence that did not need a post | F |
To build it now is waste of timber | G |
And fertile lands it doth cumber | G |

And pine stump fence with its sharp roots | H |
Will long endure and ward off brutes | H |
For the crops they ample shield | I |
And do protect each separate field | I |

But old style fence doth waste much land | J |
Where weeds do grow and bush expand | J |
And thistle down doth blow from thence | H |
So folks build wire and the board fence | H |
