The Old Snake Fence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEAA FFGG HHII JJHH

In early times the pioneerA
When a few acres he did clearA
He found 'an ample recompenseB
For splitting rails and making fenceB
-
Though it was crooked as a snakeC
And zigzag style did not awakeC
He thought it was a thing of beautyD
Yet in its day it did its dutyD
-
And though the old snake fence must fallE
'Twas easy made axe wedge and maulE
Were all the tools the pioneerA
Required the old rail fence to rearA
-
And the old pioneer could boastF
Of fence that did not need a postF
To build it now is waste of timberG
And fertile lands it doth cumberG
-
And pine stump fence with its sharp rootsH
Will long endure and ward off brutesH
For the crops they ample shieldI
And do protect each separate fieldI
-
But old style fence doth waste much landJ
Where weeds do grow and bush expandJ
And thistle down doth blow from thenceH
So folks build wire and the board fenceH
