The Gates Ajar Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGEE BBHH BBII AABB

A good kind man who knew no maliceA
Happy with wife and daughter AliceA
More precious far to him than goldB
His little darling six years oldB
-
True nobleman with many friendsC
His career too soon it endsC
The casket friends enshrined with flowersD
While soul had fled to heavenly bowersD
-
The wreaths were lovely but the starE
Admired by all was gates ajarE
The widow led her little girlF
To where death his dart did hurlF
-
And stricken her poor father downG
But child exclaimed he's won the crownG
And he will watch for me afarE
And keep for me the gates ajarE
-
And when we cross the crystal fountB
He will point out the heavenly mountB
Here neither sun nor moon doth shineH
Lighted with radiance all divineH
-
For I know well for me he'll waitB
Anxious at the pearly gateB
For I would fear to view aloneI
The glories of the heavenly throneI
-
Pa will admit his little AliceA
Safe into the heavenly palaceA
And glories to me will unfoldB
As we tread the streets of goldB
