Gent on sidewalk held out his footA
While boy in gutter brushed his bootB
But at this time how sad alasC
An unruly horse did o'er him passC
-
The child for friends he sad did lackD
They said he was but a shoeblackD
Kind hearted man the poor child boreE
To a soft cot in back of storeE
-
And brought from hospital wardF
A skilful nurse the lad to guardG
She often listened for his breathH
As he was passing the vale of deathH
-
But poor child once he ope'd his eyesI
And he looked round in great surpriseI
Feebly he asked heaving a sighJ
Where in the world now am IJ
-
The tender nurse bent o'er his faceK
And said dear boy you're in good placeK
She asked his name he said it was TomL
And that for long he had no homeM
-
And since his mother was stricken deadN
He had not once reposed in bedN
And while suffering child did rackD
He eagerly asked will mother come backD
-
The nurse she gently answered noO
But to your dear mother you can goO
In his last sleep he had a dreamP
Shining up boots it was his themeP
-
He soon awoke and called out motherQ
I see you and little brotherQ
Christ I know has me forgivenR
For they are beckoning me to HeavenR
