Sailor's Yarn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHHHII JJKKAALLMMNOPPQRCCSS TTKUVVWWXXYYLLWhile voyaging on northern seas | A |
For days we could not catch a breeze | A |
But were held fast as if in vice | B |
Surrounded by the bergs of ice | B |
We could not move the ship or boat | C |
But on low flat iceberg we did float | C |
Of provisions we took good store | D |
With big oars we rowed the berg to shore | D |
And pride and joy each one feels | E |
When we had caught ten thousand seals | E |
And our brave boys each one they dare | F |
To boldly capture great white bear | F |
On floating berg we built with boards | G |
A storehouse for to hold our hordes | G |
We had a stove and stock of coal | H |
So we enjoyed this voyage droll | H |
In centre of berg we dug a hole | H |
And erected a strong pole | H |
The frost and ice soon held it fast | I |
And well it served us for a mast | I |
On which we stretched out our sails | J |
And scud along before the gales | J |
Until we came to an island | K |
And on its sides it seemed highland | K |
And Britain being queen of seas | A |
For her this island we did seize | A |
To give her new coaling station | L |
For to benefit the nation | L |
So when we had sailed landward | M |
We erected British standard | M |
On the highest mountain top | N |
Which graceful down to sea did slope | O |
We cast our anchor in its side | P |
So to explore it far and wide | P |
But what was our astonishment | Q |
Without the least admonishment | R |
Our island soon away did float | C |
As if it was a mighty boat | C |
Can you believe this wondrous tale | S |
It proved to be a monster whale | S |
And o'er the ocean quick it flew | T |
With our great iceberg and our crew | T |
Until it came to Newfoundland | K |
Where all did safe on the ground land | U |
Poor whale was stranded on the beach | V |
And his sea home no more could reach | V |
Our crew in great wealth each on shares | W |
By selling whale and seals and bears | W |
We hired steam tug to reach our ship | X |
Now free from ice we had quick trip | X |
And she being loaded down with seal | Y |
And we all shared in common weal | Y |
For joy each of us had reason | L |
Making two trips in one season | L |
