Potato Bug Exterminators Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFBCGHIJ GGKKLLJJ MGNNGGII GGOOPPPP

During the summer of we were walking along past a large field ofA
potatoes in North Oxford where we beheld the strange spectacle of aB
pair of bipeds drilling their offspring to march up one potato row andC
down the other so as to annihilate the enemy who had assembled inD
vast armies dressed in yellow garments and who were committingE
fearful depredations on the fruits of the husbandmen until the valuableF
auxilliary forces rushed to the rescue of the farmer o'erwhelming theB
enemy and with one fell swoop bringing on them consternation andC
ruin dire It appears that the foe or their progenitorsG
had been citizens of Colordo in the far West And thatH
having conquered all before them they sought anotherI
World to conquer hereJ
-
When we do trace out nature's lawsG
And view effects and muse on causeG
For the future there's great hopeK
If we our eyes do only opeK
With joy they will often glistenL
If to truth one doth but listenL
But people often turn deaf earJ
And what is useful will not hearJ
-
Now for a minute lend your luggs sicM
Our theme it is potato bugsG
Just buy a pair of young peafowlN
Their voice may be like to screech owlN
But soon as the potato showsG
You there will find the peafowl goesG
Up one row and down the otherI
Like loving sister with brotherI
-
And you will find that down their muggsG
Have disappeared potato bugsG
Theres no more need of Paris greenO
For they will keep potatoes cleanO
And faithful they will work all dayP
For to them 'tis gay sport and playP
No more you need their voice bewailP
But admire beauties of the tailP
