Gordon And Burnaby, 1885 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEE FFGG HHII EEJJ CCKL MMNN

When the Chinese did rebelA
Gordon alone he could them quellB
With justice they his name revereC
The man who bullets did not fearC
-
It seemed as if his life had charmD
That spear or lance could never harmD
He went alone this wondrous manE
To fight false prophet of SoudanE
-
Assistance it arrives too lateF
And traitors they have oped the gateF
To meet the foe he doth advanceG
But fatal wound receives from lanceG
-
And Britons all they do take prideH
In Burnaby's Asiatic rideH
Russian mysteries to discoverI
He crossed many a plain and riverI
-
And his brave spirit led the vanE
To relieve Gordon in SoudanE
With his strong arm every blowJ
Laid at his feet some Arab foeJ
-
But strong brave man who knew no fearC
He was transfixed by Arab spearC
And thus brave men their lives have lostK
Of war let nations never boastL
-
Unless it is in self defenceM
Then they have glorious recompenseM
But arts of peace they should be prizedN
By nations truly ChristianizedN
