O'er a tiny sparkling spring | A |
Beheld a sleek and beauteous mink | B |
Was enjoying a bath and drink | B |

And though the hawk was bent on slaughter | C |
The mink was more at home on water | C |
And it is strange this curious quarrel | D |
All occurred in a sunk barrel | D |

In the Township of Nissouri | C |
There the hawk it came to sorrow | C |
But it strove often for to sink | B |
In vain it strove to drown the mink | B |

But mink it did successful balk | E |
All the attacks were made by hawk | E |
The bird was drenched it could not fly | F |
And ne'er again it soared on high | F |
