The following appeared in Truth in the form of a prose tale ofA
considerable length We have concentrated the essenceB
thereof into the few verses below It is a tale of theC
Canadian North West during the times of the HudsonD
Bay Company's ruleE
-
Two youths employed at the fur fortF
Resolved to have half day of sportF
From Jasper House in the far northG
For game they joyous issued forthG
The factor of the Hudson BayH
Granted them a few hours' playH
And it was in cold winter timeI
When thick on lake was glassy rimeI
But beneath o'er all their routeJ
They saw below big speckled troutK
With hatchet ice they did clearL
And the beauteous trout did spearL
-
For they were longing for a dishM
Of this sweet and savory fishM
And they caught many too with baitN
For in the day it was not lateN
But it was cloudy with snow stormI
Yet they saw the noble formI
While the hurricane did blowO
Of a fine noble buffaloO
So they resolved to have a treatP
Of the delicious buffalo meatP
But he did on his haunches rearL
To their surprise it was a bearQ
-
The lake being smooth the youths did skateN
Resolved for to seal his fateN
A pistol shot made bruin roarR
And from him trickled drops of goreR
They round him skate and fresh blood drewS
When they at him the hatchet threwS
-
He chased one and then the otherT
For men on skates did him botherT
But the bold Scottish lad McBeathU
Alas he nearly met his deathU
When he so boldly did press nearL
To probe him with the sharp fish spearL
-
For with fell swoop the paws of bruinV
To him they almost did bring ruinD
But he so dexterously did skateN
That he escaped such horrid fateN
And now they skated back to fortF
For aid for to renew the sportF
They knew their game was no trifleW
So they secured a trusty rifleW
Returning he had fled to woodX
But they tracked him with his bloodY
For they did not yet despairQ
But that they would capture bearQ
-
They saw the elder bushes swayH
While he did force through them his wayH
And heard the brushwood loudly snapZ
Where he went through he left a gapZ
They skated swiftly o 'er the iceA2
And were near brushwood in a triceA2
Full soon the savage beast is slainB2
With rifle bullet in his brainB2
And now these hunters do take prideC2
In skin as large as buffalo hideC2
For Indian stripped the skin of bearQ
And left the carcass in his lairQ
