Two youths employed at the fur fortA
Resolved to have half day of sportA
From Jasper House in the far northB
For game they joyous issued forthB
The factor of the Hudson BayC
Granted them a few hours playC
And it was in cold winter timeD
When thick on lake was glassy rimeD
But beneath o'er all their routeE
They saw below big speckled troutF
With hatchet ice they did clearG
And the beauteous trout did spearG
-
Soon bear they saw and youths did skateH
Resolved for to seal his fateH
A pistol shot made bruin roarI
And from him trickled drops of goreI
They round him skate and fresh blood drewJ
When they at him the hatchet threwJ
He first chased one and then the otherK
For men on skates did him botherK
But the bold Scottish lad McBethL
Alas he nearly met his deathL
When he so boldly did press nearG
To probe with the sharp fish spearG
-
They knew their game was no trifleM
So they secured a trusty rifleM
Returning he had fled to woodN
But they traced him with his bloodO
They saw the elder bushes swayC
While he did force through them his wayC
They skated swiftly o'er the iceP
And were near brushwood in a triceP
Full soon the savage beast is slainQ
With rifle bullet in his brainQ
And now these hunters do take prideR
In skin as large as Buffalo hideR
