Fight Of A Buffalo With Wolves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AB CCDDEEFFAAGGEEHHCCII JJKKHHLLMMNNCCOOPPGG QQRRSSCCWe were so deeply impressed with the courage displayed by a buffalo | A |
in a prose tale that we transposed the description into verse | B |
- | |
A buffalo lord of the plain | C |
With massive neck and mighty mane | C |
While from his herd he slowly strays | D |
He on green herbage calm doth graze | D |
And when at last he lifts his eyes | E |
A savage wolf he soon espies | E |
But scarcely deigns to turn his head | F |
For it inspires him with no dread | F |
He knows the wolf is treacherous foe | A |
But feels he soon could lay him low | A |
A moment more and there's a pair | G |
Whose savage eyes do on him glare | G |
But with contempt them both he scorns | E |
Unworthy of his powerful horns | E |
Their numbers soon do multiply | H |
But the whole pack he doth defy | H |
He could bound quickly o'er the plain | C |
And his own herd could soon regain | C |
His foes they now are full a score | I |
With lolling tongues pant for his gore | I |
- | |
He hears their teeth all loudly gnash | J |
So eager his big bones to crash | J |
On every side they him infest | K |
The north the south the east the west | K |
Fierce rage doth now gleam from his eye | H |
Resolved to conquer or to die | H |
'Round him they yelp and howl and growl | L |
He glares on them with angry scowl | L |
They circle closer him around | M |
He roars and springs with mighty bound | M |
And of his power gives ample proof | N |
Felling them with horn and hoof | N |
Though some lay dead upon the plain | C |
Yet their attack was not in vain | C |
For they have tasted of his blood | O |
Resolved it soon shall pour a flood | O |
He feels that they have torn his hide | P |
And streams gush from each limb and side | P |
He rushes on them in despair | G |
And tosses them full high in air | G |
But others rush on him and pull | Q |
Down to the earth that glorious bull | Q |
On the flesh of this noble beast | R |
Their bloody jaws they soon do feast | R |
Full worthy of a better fate | S |
Far from his herd and his dear mate | S |
And they do look for him in vain | C |
His bones do whiten now the plain | C |
