Babies carried off and changed by fairies In mid winter ofA
last winter of in Burghed in the North of ScotlandB
around great fires incantations were pronounced to driveC
away the evil spirits The custom has come down fromD
the time of the DruidsE
-
Where'er you find the Fisher folkF
There under superstitions yokeF
For a strong faith 'mong them prevailsG
Of truth of witch and fairy talesG
They think that witch could hurl a shaftH
Which would o'erwhelm their fishing craftH
For witches do with Satan truckI
They can give good or bring bad luckI
Fish women do their children teachJ
To bait the lines down on the beachJ
Themselves do wade in sea for netK
So husband's feet will not get wetK
For the women are barefootedK
And the men are heavy bootedK
-
In Fisher Town of CromartyK
There once did meet a noisy partyK
Confusion worse than Babel's TowerL
It did prevail for a whole hourL
When from sea shore wives did returnM
Each one did find good cause to mournN
For each babe was left in cradleO
Had been changed 'tis no fableO
They said 'twas fairies did them changeP
And left with them but weaklings strangeP
Old wife to end confusion wildK
Said each must bring to her the childK
Soon mothers they did find their dearsG
And did wipe then from eyes all tearsG
While few young men across the wayQ
They glorious did enjoy the frayQ
For while the mothers were at beachJ
They changed all babes within their reachJ
