Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHHIIJJCC KKLLMMNNCCJJOO| A lad brought up in Highland vale | A |
| Who did believe each fairy tale | A |
| Which his granney oft to him told | B |
| And of witches and of warlocks bold | B |
| And he himself would often pore | C |
| For hours reading wizard lore | C |
| One night his mother to the town | D |
| In a hurry sent him down | D |
| So o'er his poney he did stride | E |
| And to the town did fearful ride | E |
| He thought that demons they would rush | F |
| On him from every rock and bush | G |
| And as he went through the quarry | H |
| It did great increase his flurry | H |
| He felt that fiends with fiercest hate | I |
| Would surely there seal fast his fate | I |
| But town he reached and neath his vest | J |
| He parcel pressed beneath his vest | J |
| The poney now he mounts once more | C |
| For to pass quarry as before | C |
| But alas at that fatal spot | K |
| He heard a gun he was elf shot | K |
| He felt that from his breast a flood | L |
| Was pouring down off his heart's blood | L |
| But he clung fast to pony's back | M |
| Though loss of blood his frame did rack | M |
| But in spite of his alarms | N |
| He resolved to die in mother's arms | N |
| And when he reached his own door | C |
| He said that he was drenched in gore | C |
| From bullet hole all in his breast | J |
| His father opened up his vest | J |
| And he did sadly fear the worst | O |
| But found yeast bottle had but burst | O |
