Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG HIHI IJIJ IKIL IMIM NONO GPGQ RIRI RSRS TURUOnce on a time there lived a duck | A |
And by its fishing it did thrive | B |
So one day it longed to suck | A |
An oyster and for one did dive | B |
- | |
The oyster near shore lay open | C |
The duck its gizzard for to fill | D |
Resolved that he would pop in | E |
Between the shells his sharp bill | D |
- | |
And then he would have glorious treat | F |
But oyster closed on it its shell | G |
And duck it got no oyster meat | F |
But worse than that the duck befell | G |
- | |
This oyster was so very large | H |
It held the duck's head under water | I |
And towed small oysters like a barge | H |
Each one clung to it like squatter | I |
- | |
Duck it died of too much moisture | I |
And it floated towards the beach | J |
And to its bill clung big oyster | I |
Sticking to it like a horse leach | J |
- | |
On the shore there stood a shyster | I |
Watching fat duck floating to him | K |
And the wondrous big oyster | I |
How fine it would be to stew them | L |
- | |
Alas the duck lost its dinner | I |
And at the same time lost its life | M |
But on it dined a hungry sinner | I |
Who did reap all the spoils of strife | M |
- | |
For when the duck to land did float | N |
It towed small oysters not a few | O |
For it sailed like to a boat | N |
With fat duck pie and oyster stew | O |
- | |
None can the poor duck's fate bewail | G |
For it reckoned without its host | P |
It strove for conquest and did fail | G |
Fighting for spoil it battle lost | Q |
- | |
You see the wild duck did not know | R |
When it attacked the big oyster | I |
It had to fight a numerous foe | R |
Of these shell fish a whole cluster | I |
- | |
Borne feathers on briny billow | R |
They were full of springy down | S |
And they made a glorious pillow | R |
Where fellow he could rest his crown | S |
- | |
This chap he did not plow nor sow | T |
But from sea and land he did reap | U |
The wealth that others caused to grow | R |
And thus he treasures up did heap | U |
