Once on a time there lived a duckA
And by its fishing it did thriveB
So one day it longed to suckA
An oyster and for one did diveB
-
The oyster near shore lay openC
The duck its gizzard for to fillD
Resolved that he would pop inE
Between the shells his sharp billD
-
And then he would have glorious treatF
But oyster closed on it its shellG
And duck it got no oyster meatF
But worse than that the duck befellG
-
This oyster was so very largeH
It held the duck's head under waterI
And towed small oysters like a bargeH
Each one clung to it like squatterI
-
Duck it died of too much moistureI
And it floated towards the beachJ
And to its bill clung big oysterI
Sticking to it like a horse leachJ
-
On the shore there stood a shysterI
Watching fat duck floating to himK
And the wondrous big oysterI
How fine it would be to stew themL
-
Alas the duck lost its dinnerI
And at the same time lost its lifeM
But on it dined a hungry sinnerI
Who did reap all the spoils of strifeM
-
For when the duck to land did floatN
It towed small oysters not a fewO
For it sailed like to a boatN
With fat duck pie and oyster stewO
-
None can the poor duck's fate bewailG
For it reckoned without its hostP
It strove for conquest and did failG
Fighting for spoil it battle lostQ
-
You see the wild duck did not knowR
When it attacked the big oysterI
It had to fight a numerous foeR
Of these shell fish a whole clusterI
-
Borne feathers on briny billowR
They were full of springy downS
And they made a glorious pillowR
Where fellow he could rest his crownS
-
This chap he did not plow nor sowT
But from sea and land he did reapU
The wealth that others caused to growR
And thus he treasures up did heapU
