In a great city hospitalA
There lay poor Mary Crosby smallB
She had no friends her heart to cheerC
So time with her passed sad and drearC
-
She sought for ease but all in vainD
Month after month she passed in painD
She had no relative nor friendE
Who aid or comfort could her lendE
-
A surgeon saw her cheerless stateF
And deplored the poor child's fateF
She tried to make doll of her fingerC
And sang to it poor little singerC
-
Her's indeed was an awful lotG
The weary days she spent in cotG
For the poor child she could not walkH
And it soon exhausted her to talkH
-
But surgeon bought her ribbon gayI
And with it she all day did playI
The giver often she did blessJ
And thought sometimes she was princessJ
-
For in it she did take such prideK
She fancied she was beauteous brideK
And was possessed of great richesL
Or thought herself a wealthy DuchessM
-
And she would bind it round her hairC
Imagining that she was fairC
But poor child feels that she must dieN
She asks the surgeon to come nighN
-
And kindly o'er her he doth standO
She asked him for to take her handO
Thanked him for ribbon green and blueP
Then evermore bade him adieuP
