The British soldiers on the NileA
With gratitude did kindly smileA
On the Canadian voyageursB
Who skilfully did ply their oarsB
-
And they invoked their benisonC
On boatsmen led by DenisonC
Neither the rapids nor the fallsB
Along the Nile these braves appalsB
-
For in such toils they did partakeD
On each native stream and lakeD
Thoughts of their homes in visions throngE
While singing Canadian boat songE
-
And they all hoped again to seeB
The glorious land of maple treeB
From their memories they neverF
Forgot the land of lake and riverF
-
While up the Nile they do advanceB
They dream about their own St LawrenceB
And Manitoba's streams and lakesB
Pleasant reflections oft awakesB
-
And thus each day they cheerful toilG
Ascending of old Father NileA
Whose waters fertilize the soilG
And is the home of crocodileA
-
Wolseley he had exhibitionC
In Red River expeditionC
How these voyageurs could steerH
Or with the axe a roadway clearH
-
Those who speak the tongue of FranceB
From the banks of the St LawrenceB
At call to arms quick advanceB
With rifle bayonet and lanceB
