For many months they were wishing | B |
The sport of hunting and of fishing | B |

They rowed along the lake in punt | C |
When tired of fishing they would hunt | C |
At river's mouth they caught fine trout | D |
In woods close by they saw bear's snout | D |

In front of her play little chubs | E |
Fat and slick her darling cubs | E |
Kind thoughts in their breasts they smother | F |
And cruelly they shoot the mother | F |

And bullet fearful tore her jaws | E |
A bloody wound but with her paws | E |
Erect in air an awful sight | G |
She was prepared for her young to fight | G |

But this did not daunt bold Bill Brown | H |
With club he tried to knock her down | H |
But she gave him an awful hug | I |
With paws she at him fierce did tug | I |

He would been smothered but for Dawes | E |
Who rescued him from her great paws | E |
With club he knocked her on the crown | H |
And thus he saved the life of Brown | H |

She rose again with savage frown | H |
And quickly broke two ribs for Brown | H |
His clothes were all torn with her claws | E |
She smeared with blood both Brown and Dawes | E |

But Dawes now quick doth end the strife | J |
By stabbing her with hunting knife | J |
And now around this hunter bold | K |
His bear skin coat keeps out the cold | K |
