Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF EEGG HHII EEHH HHEE JJKK

Two youths came over from York stateA
Bill Brown and Tom Dawes his mateA
For many months they were wishingB
The sport of hunting and of fishingB
-
They rowed along the lake in puntC
When tired of fishing they would huntC
At river's mouth they caught fine troutD
In woods close by they saw bear's snoutD
-
In front of her play little chubsE
Fat and slick her darling cubsE
Kind thoughts in their breasts they smotherF
And cruelly they shoot the motherF
-
And bullet fearful tore her jawsE
A bloody wound but with her pawsE
Erect in air an awful sightG
She was prepared for her young to fightG
-
But this did not daunt bold Bill BrownH
With club he tried to knock her downH
But she gave him an awful hugI
With paws she at him fierce did tugI
-
He would been smothered but for DawesE
Who rescued him from her great pawsE
With club he knocked her on the crownH
And thus he saved the life of BrownH
-
She rose again with savage frownH
And quickly broke two ribs for BrownH
His clothes were all torn with her clawsE
She smeared with blood both Brown and DawesE
-
But Dawes now quick doth end the strifeJ
By stabbing her with hunting knifeJ
And now around this hunter boldK
His bear skin coat keeps out the coldK
