Robin and his merry menA
Lived just like the birdsB
They had almost as many tracks as thoughtsC
And whistles and songs as wordsB
-
Up they were with the earliest signD
Of the sun's up looking eyeE
But not an archer breakfastedF
Till he twinkled from the skyE
-
All the morning they were wontF
To fly their grey goose quillsB
At butts or wands or trees or twigsB
Till theirs was the skill of skillsB
-
With swords too they played lustilyG
And at quarter staffH
Many a hit would have made some cryE
Which only made them laughH
-
The horn was then their dinner bellG
When like princes of the woodF
Under the glimmering summer treesB
Pure venison was their foodF
-
Pure venison and a little wineD
Except when the skies were roughI
Or when they had a feasting dayF
For their blood was wine enoughI
-
And story then and joke and songJ
And Harry's harp went roundF
And sometimes they'd get up and danceB
For pleasure of the soundF
-
Tingle tangle said the harpK
As they footed in and outF
Good lord it was a sight to seeB
Their feathers float aboutF
-
A pleasant sight especiallyB
If Margery was thereL
Or little Ciss or laughing BessB
Or Moll with the clumps of hairL
-
Or any other merry lassB
From the neighbouring villagesB
Who came with milk and eggs or fruitF
A singing through the treesB
-
For all the country round aboutF
Was fond of Robin HoodF
With whom they got a share of moreM
Than the acorns in the woodF
-
Nor ever would he suffer harmN
To woman above allG
No plunder were she ne'er so greatF
No fright to great or smallG
-
No not a single kiss unlikedF
Nor one look saddening clipO
Accurst be he said Robin HoodF
Makes pale a woman's lipO
-
Only on the haughty richP
And on their unjust storeM
He'd lay his fines of equityF
For his merry men and the poorQ
-
And special was his joy no doubtF
Which made the dish to curseB
To light upon a good fat friarR
And carve him of his purseB
-
A monk to him was a toad in the holeG
And an abbot a pig in grainS
But a bishop was a baron of beefT
With cut and come againA
-
Never poor man came for helpU
And wnet away deniedF
Never woman for redressB
And went away wet eyedF
-
Says Robin to the poor who cameV
To ask of him reliefT
You do but get your goods againA
That were altered by the thiefT
-
There ploughman is a sheaf of your'sB
Turned to yellow goldF
And miller there's your last year's rentF
'Twill wrap thee from the coldF
-
And you there Wat of LancashireW
Who such a way have comeX
Get upon your land tax manY
And ride it merrily homeZ
