Arms And The Man. - The Ancient Enemies Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEEFFGGHHIIJJ

Brave was the foeman well he held his groundA
But here defeat at kindred hands he foundA
The shafts rained on him in a righteous causeB
Came from the quiver of Old England's lawsC
-
He fought in vain and on this spot went downD
The jus divinum and the kingly crownD
But for those scenes Time long has made amendsE
The ancient enemies are present friendsE
Two swords in Massachusetts rich in dustF
And better still the peacefulness of rustF
Told the whole story in its double partsG
To one who lives in two great nations' heartsG
And late above Old England's roar and dinH
Slow tolling bells spoke sympathy of kinH
Victoria's wreath blooms on the sleeping breastI
Of him just gone to his reward and restI
And firm and fast between two mighty PowersJ
New treaties live in those undying flowersJ
