Now plead my cause Almighty GodA
With all the sons of strifeB
And fight against the men of bloodC
Who fight against my lifeB
-
Draw out thy spear and stop their wayD
Lift thine avenging rodA
But to my soul in mercv sayD
I am thy Savior GodA
-
They plant their snares to catch my feetE
And nets of mischief spreadF
Plunge the destroyers in the pitG
That their own hands have madeH
-
Let fogs and darkness hide their wayD
And slipp'ry be their groundI
Thy wrath shall make their lives a preyD
And all their rage confoundI
-
They fly like chaff before the windJ
Before thine angry breathK
The angel of the Lord behindJ
Pursues them down to deathK
-
They love the road that leads to hellL
Then let the rebels dieM
Whose malice is implacableN
Against the Lord on highM
-
But if thou hast a chosen fewO
Amongst that impious raceP
Divide them from the bloody crewO
By thy surprising graceP
-
Then will I raise my tuneful voiceQ
To make thy wonders knownR
In their salvation I'll rejoiceQ
And bless thee for my ownR
-
Behold the love the gen'rous loveS
That holy David showsT
Hark how his sounding bowels moveU
To his afflicted foesT
-
When they are sick his soul complainsV
And seems to feel the smartW
The spirit of the gospel reignsV
And melts his pious heartW
-
How did his flowing tears condoleN
As for a brother deadF
And fasting mortified his soulN
While for their life he prayedH
-
They groaned and cursed him on their bedF
Yet still he pleads and mournsX
And double blessings on his headF
The righteous God returnsY
-
Glorious type of heav'nly graceP
Thus Christ the Lord appearsZ
While sinners curse the Savior praysA2
And pities them with tearsB2
-
He the true David Isr'el's KingC2
Blessed and beloved of GodA
To save us rebels dead in sinD2
Paid his own dearest bloodC
