Will God for ever east us offA
His wrath for ever smokeB
Against the people of' his loveC
His little chosen flockD
-
Think of the tribes so dearly boughtE
With their Redeemer's bloodF
Nor let thy Zion be forgotE
Where once thy glory stoodG
-
Lift up thy feet and march in hasteH
Aloud our ruin callsI
See what a wide and fearful wasteH
Is made within thy wallsI
-
Where once thy churches prayed and sangJ
Thy foes profanely roarK
Over thy gates their ensigns hangJ
Sad tokens of their powerL
-
How are the seats of worship brokeB
They tear the buildings downM
And he that deals the heaviest strokeB
Procures the chief renownM
-
With flames they threaten to destroyN
Thy children in their nestO
Come let us burn at once they cryP
The temple and the priestQ
-
And still to heighten our distressR
Thy presence is withdrawnS
Thy wonted signs of power and graceT
Thy power and grace are goneS
-
No prophet speaks to calm our woesU
But all the seers mournV
There's not a soul amongst us knowsU
The time of thy returnW
-
How long eternal God how longX
Shall men of pride blasphemeY
Shall saints be made their endless songX
And bear immortal shameY
-
Canst thou for ever sit and bearZ
Thine holy name profanedQ
And still thy jealousy forbearZ
And still withhold thine handQ
-
What strange deliv'rance hast thou shownA2
In ages long beforeZ
And now no other God we ownA2
No other God adoreZ
-
Thou didst divide the raging seaB2
By thy resistless mightQ
To make thy tribes a wondrous wayC2
And then secure their flightQ
-
Is not the world of nature thineD2
The darkness and the dayC2
Didst thou not bid the morning shineD2
And mark the sun his wayC2
-
Hath not thy power formed ev'ry coastQ
And set the earth its boundsE2
With summer's heat and winter's frostQ
In their perpetual roundsE2
-
And shall the sons of earth and dustQ
That sacred power blasphemeY
Will not thy hand that formed them firstQ
Avenge thine injured nameY
-
Think on the cov'nant thou hast madeQ
And all thy words of loveC
Nor let the birds of prey invadeQ
And vex thy mourning doveC
-
Our foes would triumph in our bloodQ
And make our hope their jestQ
Plead thy own cause Almighty GodQ
And give thy children restQ
