Saints chastised and sinners destroyed or Instructive afflictionsC
-
O God to whom revenge belongsD
Proclaim thy wrath aloudE
Let sovereign power redress our wrongsD
Let justice smite the proudE
-
They say The Lord nor sees nor hearsF
When will the fools be wiseG
Can he be deaf who formed their earsH
Or blind who made their eyesG
-
He knows their impious thoughts are vainI
And they shall feel his powerJ
His wrath shall pierce their souls with painI
In some surprising hourJ
-
But if thy saints deserve rebukeK
Thou hast a gentler rodL
Thy providence's and thy bookM
Shall make them know their GodL
-
Blest is the man thy hands chastiseG
And to his duty drawN
Thy scourges make thy children wiseG
When they forget thy lawN
-
But God will ne'er cast off his saintsO
Nor his own promise breakP
He pardons his inheritanceQ
For their Redeemer's sakeP
