Israel's rebellion and punishmentA
-
O What a stiff rebellious houseB
Was Jacob's ancient raceC
False to their own most solemn vowsD
And to their Maker's graceC
-
They broke the cov'nant of his loveE
And did his laws despiseF
Forgot the works he wrought to proveG
His power before their eyesF
-
They saw the plagues on Egypt lightH
From his revenging handI
What dreadful tokens of his mightH
Spread o'er the stubborn landI
-
They saw him cleave the mighty seaJ
And marched in safety throughK
With wat'ry walls to guard their wayL
Till they had 'scaped the foeM
-
A wondrous pillar marked the roadN
Composed of shade and lightH
By day it proved a shelt'ring cloudO
A leading fire by nightH
-
He from the rock their thirst suppliedP
The gushing waters fellQ
And ran in rivers by their sideP
A constant miracleR
-
Yet they provoked the Lord most HighS
And dared distrust his handI
Can he with bread our host supplyS
Amidst this desert landI
-
The Lord with indignation heardT
And caused his wrath to flameU
His terrors ever stand preparedV
To vindicate his nameU
