Israel saved and the Assyrians destroyedA
-
In Judah God of old was knownB
His name in Isr'el greatC
In Salem stood his holy throneB
And Zion was his seatD
-
Among the praises of his saintsE
His dwelling there he choseF
There he received their just complaintsE
Against their haughty foesF
-
From Zion went his dreadful wordG
And broke the threat'ning spearH
The bow the arrows and the swordI
And crushed th' Assyrian warJ
-
What are the earth's wide kingdoms elseK
But mighty hills of preyL
The hill on which Jehovah dwellsM
Is glorious more than theyL
-
'Twas Zion's King that stopped the breathN
Of captains and their bandsO
The men of might slept fast in deathN
And never found their handsO
-
At thy rebuke O Jacob's GodP
Both horse and chariot fellQ
Who knows the terrors of thy rodP
Thy vengeance who can tellQ
-
What power can stand before thy sightR
When once thy wrath appearsS
When heav'n shines round with dreadful lightR
The earth lies still and fearsS
-
When God in his own sovereign waysT
Comes down to save th' oppressedU
The wrath of man shall work his praiseT
And he'll restrain the restU
-
Vow to the Lord and tribute bringV
Ye princes fear his frownW
His terror shakes the proudest kingV
And cuts an army downW
-
The thunder of his sharp rebukeX
Our haughty foes shall feelY
For Jacob's God hath not forsookZ
But dwells in Zion stillA2
