The sufferings of Christ for our salvationC
-
Save me O God the swelling floodsD
Break in upon my soulE
I sink and sorrows o'er my headF
Like mighty waters rollE
-
I cry till all my voice be goneG
In tears I waste the dayH
My God behold my longing eyesI
And shorten thy delayH
-
They hate my soul without a causeJ
And still their number growsK
More than the hairs around my headF
And mighty are my foesK
-
'Twas then I paid that dreadful debtL
That men could never payH
And gave those honors to thy lawM
Which sinners took awayH
-
Thus in the great Messiah's nameN
The royal prophet mournsO
Thus he awakes our hearts to griefP
And gives us joy by turnsQ
-
Now shall the saints rejoice and findR
Salvation in my nameN
For I have borne their heavy loadS
Of sorrow pain and shameN
-
Grief like a garment clothed me roundT
And sackcloth was my dressU
While I procured for naked soulsV
A robe of righteousnessW
-
Amongst my brethren and the JewsX
I like a stranger stoodY
And bore their vile reproach to bringZ
The Gentiles near to GodA2
-
I came in sinful mortals' steadF
To do my Father's willB2
Yet when I cleansed my Father's houseC2
They scandalized my zealD2
-
My fasting and my holy groansE2
Were made the drunkard's songF2
But God from his celestial throneG2
Heard my complaining tongueH2
-
He saved me from the dreadful deepI2
Nor let my soul be drownedT
He raised and fixed my sinking feetJ2
On well established groundT
-
'Twas in a most accepted hourK2
My prayer arose on highL2
And for my sake my God shall hearM2
The dying sinner's cryL2
