The last judgmentA
-
The Lord the Sovereign sends his summons forthB
Calls the south nations and awakes the northB
From east to west the sounding orders spreadC
Through distant worlds and regions of the deadC
No more shall atheists mock his long delayD
His vengeance sleeps no more behold the dayD
-
Behold the Judge descends his guards are nighE
Tempest and fire attend him down the skyE
Heav'n earth and hell draw near let all things comeF
To hear his justice and the sinner's doomG
But gather first my saints the Judge commandsH
Bring them ye angels from their distant landsH
-
Behold my cov'nant stands for ever goodI
Sealed by th' eternal Sacrifice in bloodJ
And signed with all their names the Greek the JewK
That paid the ancient worship or the newK
There's no distinction here come spread their thronesH
And near me seat my fav'rites and my sonsH
-
I their Almighty Savior and their GodL
I am their Judge ye heav'ns proclaim abroadM
My just eternal sentence and declareN
Those awful truths that sinners dread to hearO
Sinners in Zion tremble and retireP
I doom the painted hypocrite to fireQ
-
Not for the want of goats or bullocks slainR
Do I condemn thee bulls and goats are vainR
Without the flames of love in vain the storeS
Of brutal off'rings that were mine beforeS
Mine are the tamer beasts and savage breedT
Flocks herds and fields and forests where they feedT
-
If I were hungry would I ask thee foodU
When did I thirst or drink thy bullocks' bloodJ
Can I be flattered with thy cringing bowsH
Thy solemn chatt'rings and fantastic vowsH
Are my eyes charmed thy vestments to beholdV
Glaring in gems and gay in woven goldV
-
Unthinking wretch how couldst thou hope to pleaseH
A God a Spirit with such toys as theseH
While with my grace and statutes on thy tongueW
Thou lov'st deceit and dost thy brother wrongX
In vain to pious forms thy zeal pretendsH
Thieves and adulterers are thy chosen friendsH
-
Silent I waited with long suff'ring loveY
But didst thou hope that I should ne'er reproveY
And cherish such an impious thought withinZ
That God the Righteous would indulge thy sinZ
Behold my terrors now my thunders rollA2
And thy own crimes affright thy guilty soulA2
-
Sinners awake betimes ye fools be wiseH
Awake before this dreadful morning riseH
Change your vain thoughts your crooked works amendB2
Fly to the Savior make the Judge your friendB2
Lest like a lion his last vengeance tearN
Your trembling souls and no deliv'rer nearC2
