Pride and death or The vanity of life and richesC
-
Why doth the man of riches growD
To insolence and prideE
To see his wealth and honors flowD
With every rising tideE
-
Why doth he treat the poor with scornF
Made of the self same clayG
And boast as though his flesh was bornF
Of better dust than theyG
-
Not all his treasures can procureH
His soul a short reprieveI
Redeem from death one guilty hourJ
Or make his brother liveK
-
Life is a blessing can't be soldL
The ransom is too highM
Justice will ne'er be bribed with goldL
That man may never dieM
-
He sees the brutish and the wiseN
The tim'rous and the braveO
Quit their possessions close their eyesN
And hasten to the graveO
-
Yet 'tis his inward thought and prideE
My house shall ever standP
And that my name may long abideE
I'll give it to my landP
-
Vain are his thoughts his hopes are lostQ
How soon his memory diesN
His name is written in the dustR
Where his own carcass liesN
-
PAUSES
-
This is the folly of their wayG
And yet their sons as vainT
Approve the words their fathers sayG
And act their works againU
-
Men void of wisdom and of graceV
If honor raise them highM
Live like the beast a thoughtless raceV
And like the beast they dieM
-
Laid in the grave like silly sheepW
Death feeds upon them thereX
Till the last trumpet break their sleepW
In terror and despairX
