The sufferings and death of ChristC
-
Why has my God my soul forsookD
Nor will a smile affordE
Thus David once in anguish spokeF
And thus our dying LordE
-
Though 'tis thy chief delight to dwellG
Among thy praising saintsH
Yet thou canst hear a groan as wellG
And pity our complaintsH
-
Our fathers trusted in thy nameI
And great deliv'rance foundJ
But I'm a worm despised of menK
And trodden to the groundJ
-
Shaking the head they pass me byL
And laugh my soul to scornM
In vain he trusts in God they cryL
Neglected and forlornM
-
But thou art he who formed my fleshN
By thine almighty wordO
And since I hung upon the breastP
My hope is in the LordE
-
Why will my Father hide his faceQ
When foes stand threat'ning roundJ
In the dark hour of deep distressR
And not a helper foundJ
-
PAUSES
-
Behold thy darling left amongT
The cruel and the proudU
As bulls of Bashan fierce and strongV
As lions roaring loudU
-
From earth and hell my sorrows meetW
To multiply the smartX
They nail my hands they pierce my feetW
And try to vex my heartX
-
Yet if thy sovereign hand let looseY
The rage of earth and hellG
Why will my heav'nly Father bruiseZ
The Son he loves so wellG
-
My God if possible it beA
Withhold this bitter cupA2
But I resign my will to theeA
And drink the sorrows upA2
-
My heart dissolves with pangs unknownB2
In groans I waste my breathC2
Thy heavy hand has brought me downD2
Low as the dust of deathC2
-
Father I give my spirit upA2
And trust it in thy handE2
My dying flesh shall rest in hopeF2
And rise at thy commandE2
