-
Up from my youth may Isr'el sayB
Have I been nursed in tearsC
My griefs were constant as the dayB
And tedious as the yearsD
-
Up from my youth I bore the rageE
Of all the sons of strifeF
Oft they assailed my riper ageE
But not destroyed my lifeF
-
Their cruel plow had torn my fleshG
With furrows long and deepH
Hourly they vexed my wounds afreshG
Nor let my sorrows sleepH
-
The Lord grew angry on his throneI
And with impartial eyeJ
Measured the mischiefs they had doneK
Then let his arrows flyJ
-
How was their insolence surprisedL
To hear his thunders rollM
And all the foes of Zion seizedN
With horror to the soulM
-
Thus shall the men that hate the saintsO
Be blasted from the skyJ
Their glory fades their courage faintsO
And all their projects dieJ
-
What though they flourish tall and fairP
They have no root beneathQ
Their growth shall perish in despairP
And lie despised in deathR
-
So corn that on the house top standsO
No hope of harvest givesO
The reaper ne'er shall fill his handsO
Nor binder fold the sheavesO
-
It springs and withers on the placeO
No traveller bestowsO
A word of blessing on the grassO
Nor minds it as he goesO
