Rhyme Scheme: A AAAA BCBD EFGF HAHA AAAA IJKJ LAMA NOPOThe true God our refuge or Idolatry reproved | A |
- | |
Not to ourselves who are but dust | A |
Not to ourselves is glory due | A |
Eternal God thou only just | A |
Thou only gracious wise and true | A |
- | |
Shine forth in all thy dreadful name | B |
Why should a heathen's haughty tongue | C |
Insult us and to raise our shame | B |
Say Where's the God you've served so long | D |
- | |
The God we serve maintains his throne | E |
Above the clouds beyond the skies | F |
Through all the earth his will is done | G |
He knows our groans he hears our cries | F |
- | |
But the vain idols they adore | H |
Are senseless shapes of stone and wood | A |
At best a mass of glitt'ring ore | H |
A silver saint or golden god | A |
- | |
With eyes and ears they carve their head | A |
Deaf are their ears their eyes are blind | A |
In vain are costly off'rings made | A |
And vows are scattered in the wind | A |
- | |
Their feet were never made to move | I |
Nor hands to save when mortals pray | J |
Mortals that pay them fear or love | K |
Seem to be blind and deaf as they | J |
- | |
O Isr'el make the Lord thy hope | L |
Thy help thy refuge and thy rest | A |
The Lord shall build thy ruins up | M |
And bless the people and the priest | A |
- | |
The dead no more can speak thy praise | N |
They dwell in silence and the grave | O |
But we shall live to sing thy grace | P |
And tell the world thy power to save | O |
