Colonies planted or Nations blessed and punishedA
A Psalm for New EnglandB
-
When God provoked with daring crimesC
Scourges the madness of the timesC
He turns their fields to barren sandD
And dries the rivers from the landD
-
His word can raise the springs againE
And make the withered mountains greenF
Send showery blessings from the skiesG
And harvests in the desert riseG
-
Where nothing dwelt but beasts of preyH
Or men as fierce and wild as theyH
He bids th' oppressed and poor repairI
And builds them towns and cities thereI
-
They sow the fields and trees they plantJ
Whose yearly fruit supplies their wantK
Their race grows up from fruitful stocksL
Their wealth increases with their flocksL
-
Thus they are blessed but if they sinM
He lets the heathen nations inM
A savage crew invades their landsN
Their princes die by barb'rous handsN
-
Their captive sons exposed to scornO
Wander unpitied and forlornO
The country lies unfenced untilledK
And desolation spreads the fieldK
-
Yet if the humbled nation mournsP
Again his dreadful hand he turnsQ
Again he makes their cities thriveR
And bids the dying churches liveR
-
The righteous with a joyful senseS
Admire the works of ProvidenceT
And tongues of atheists shall no moreU
Blaspheme the God that saints adoreU
-
How few with pious care recordK
These wondrous dealings of the LordK
But wise observers still shall findK
The Lord is holy just and kindK
