God's conduct of Israel and the plagues of EgyptA
-
Give thanks to God invoke his nameB
And tell the world his graceC
Sound through the earth his deeds of fameB
That all may seek his faceC
-
His cov'nant which he kept in mindD
For num'rous ages pastE
To num'rous ages yet behindD
In equal force shall lastE
-
He sware to Abraham and his seedF
And made the blessing sureG
Gentiles the ancient promise readH
And find his truth endureG
-
Thy seed shall make all nations blestI
Said the Almighty voiceJ
And Canaan's land shall be their restI
The type of heav'nly joysK
-
How large the grant how rich the graceC
To give them Canaan's landL
When they were strangers in the placeC
A little feeble bandL
-
Like pilgrims through the countries roundM
Securely they removedN
And haughty kings that on them frownedM
Severely he reprovedM
-
Touch mine anointed and my armO
Shall soon revenge the wrongP
The man that does my prophets harmO
Shall know their God is strongP
-
Then let the world forbear its rageQ
Nor put the church in fearR
Isr'el must live through every ageQ
And be th' Almighty's careS
-
PAUSE IT
-
When Pharaoh dared to vex the saintsU
And thus provoked their GodM
Moses was sent at their complaintsU
Armed with his dreadful rodM
-
He called for darkness darkness cameB
Like an o'erwhelming floodM
He turned each lake and every streamV
To lakes and streams of bloodM
-
He gave the sign and noisome fliesW
Through the whole country spreadM
And frogs in croaking armies riseW
About the monarch's bedM
-
Through fields and towns and palacesX
The tenfold vengeance flewY
Locusts in swarms devoured their treesZ
And hail their cattle slewY
-
Then by an angel's midnight strokeA2
The flower of Egypt diedM
The strength of every house was brokeA2
Their glory and their prideM
-
Now let the world forbear its rageQ
Nor put the church in fearR
Isr'el must live through every ageQ
And be th' Almighty's careS
-
PAUSE IIT
-
Thus were the tribes from bondage broughtM
And left the hated groundM
Each some Egyptian spoils had gotM
And not one feeble foundM
-
The Lord himself chose out their wayB2
And marked their journeys rightM
Gave them a leading cloud by dayB2
A fiery guide by nightM
-
They thirst and waters from the rockC2
In rich abundance flowD2
And following still the course they tookE2
Ran all the desert throughY
-
O wondrous stream O blessed typeF2
Of ever flowing graceC
So Christ our Rock maintains our lifeG2
Through all this wildernessH2
-
Thus guarded by th' Almighty handM
The chosen tribes possessedM
Canaan the rich the promised landM
And there enjoyed their restM
-
Then let the world forbear its rageQ
The church renounce her fearR
Isr'el must live through every ageQ
And be th' Almighty's careS
