God's gentle chastisement or His tender mercy to his peopleC
-
The Lord how wondrous are his waysD
How firm his truth how large his graceE
He takes his mercy for his throneF
And thence he makes his glories knownF
-
Not half so high his power hath spreadG
The starry heav'ns above our headG
As his rich love exceeds our praiseD
Exceeds the highest hopes we raiseD
-
Not half so far hath nature placedH
The rising morning from the westI
As his forgiving grace removesJ
The daily guilt of those he lovesK
-
How slowly doth his wrath ariseL
On swifter wings salvation fliesL
And if he lets his anger burnM
How soon his frowns to pity turnM
-
Amidst his wrath compassion shinesN
His strokes are lighter than our sinsO
And while his rod corrects his saintsP
His ear indulges their complaintsP
-
So fathers their young sons chastiseL
With gentle hand and melting eyesL
The children weep beneath the smartQ
And move the pity of their heartQ
-
PAUSER
-
The mighty God the wise and justS
Knows that our frame is feeble dustS
And will no heavy loads imposeT
Beyond the strength that he bestowsT
-
He knows how soon our nature diesL
Blasted by every wind that fliesL
Like grass we spring and die as soonU
Or morning flowers that fade at noonU
-
But his eternal love is sureV
To all the saints and shall endureV
From age to age his truth shall reignW
Nor children's children hope in vainW
